Mountain Home

This new retirement home in central Vermont, for a couple from the Boston area, is situated on a remote mountaintop site with spectacular views overlooking the Green Mountains in the distance.  The program called for five bedrooms, living room, great room, sun room, kitchen / breakfast room, library and a 3 car garage along with exterior decks and patios; with all living spaces and the master bedroom suite located on the main level.

The home is organized with all the primary living spaces facing south and the "service" spaces (bathrooms, utility rooms, kitchen, storage, etc…) facing north.  Coupled with this organization is a passive solar design which lines the south facing living spaces with continuous windows for the optimization of both the view and the collection of solar heat in the winter.  Deep overhangs and shading elements along this side shield the glass areas from the summer sun.

The home is approached via a long private road that snakes up the hill, passes below and in front of the home and terminates in a driveway turn around behind the home.  The home is then entered from the back and the entry sequence culminates in a view through the south facing Living Room windows overlooking the Green Mountains.
