Pea Pond Home

The existing residence was grand and formal.  However, the spaces and the layout were not conducive to the casual living of a modern family.  The goal was to create casual living space and diminish the formality of the home, while maintaining the homes elegance.

The solution was to create a series of casual spaces within the volume of the formal structure.  A new central family room loft was created within the two story living and dining area.   Casual living space was added off the master suite and kitchen by infilling unused covered porches.  A new central arbor has been designed (but not yet built) to replace the exterior covered space lost by the infills.

The original scale of the large formal living and dining room was uncomfortable for intimate occasions.   To create intimacy, a new family room loft was added above the living and dining room.  The loft is detached from the perimeter walls, enhancing the elegance and importance of the original window wall and chimneys.  The loft’s detailing is based on the original homes but adds rhythm and variety to make the space more lyrical.

The formal kitchen was expanded and reconfigured into separate areas including a recreational space, an informal dining area, a mud room, and the kitchen.  The spaces are open and flowing to each other.  An open shelving unit provides a visual connection between the kitchen and recreation space.

The reconfigured master suite features a new bathroom, study, and closets.  A sinuous steam shower with a tiled floor, benches, walls, and ceiling that are blending seamlessly is a highlight in the master bath.
