Hook Road Residence

This new four+ bedroom house is set on a challenging, steeply sloped site with views, majestic trees, and stone walls. The schematic design phase for this project has been completed.

The clients purchased an 8+ acre extensively landscaped parcel with an existing home and several outbuildings. The existing home centered on a 1970s gabled structure with little detailing. Disjointed additions had been added over subsequent decades. The house was inconsistent with modern living and in need of significant work. The site is steeply sloped with 210 feet in elevation change, and after concluding that the current septic system location had to be maintained, the decision was made to build a new house at the location of the existing.

The primary goals included: integration with the grading and landscaping, creating a modern home with efficient circulation, taking advantage of the views to the south, having a significant presence upon arrival, and accommodating the clients’ large format photography collection.

The design is composed around two mirrored, wood clad, “L” shaped wall elements that embrace the great room and master suit. These walls are distinct from, but appear to grow out of, the stone site walls and set up the home’s circulation - from entry, through the main circulation hall, and out to the yard and view. A stone chimney anchors the cantilevered second floor bedroom wing which spans across the great room and master suite with access to roof terraces. Additional utility space and an attached garage is tucked under the house.

Even with the extensive glass, the house is tight, efficient, and sustainable with photovoltaics, geothermal, passive shading, and locally sourced materials.
